Problematic and sexualised behaviours

Gippsland CASA is committed to the prevention of sexual assault through the provision of therapeutic services for children and young people displaying problematic and abusive sexualised behaviour.

Problematic Sexualised Behaviour Program

This program is offered to children 4 -10 year old that have engaged in sexualised behaviours that have deviated from healthy age appropriate sexual development. The behaviours may, or may not, have occurred after the child experienced sexual assault but will be characterised by coercion, threats and targeting of younger or more vulnerable victims through the use of power and control.

Abusive Sexualised Behaviour Program

This program is offered to young people 11 -15 year old that have engaged in abusive sexualised behaviours that have deviated from healthy age appropriate sexual development. The behaviours may, or may not, have occurred after the child experienced sexual assault but will be characterised by coercion, threats and targeting of younger or more vulnerable victims through the use of power and control.

The differentiation in the programs is based on developmental needs, and the social and legal consequences associated with the behaviours. The program consists of a 6-8 week assessment period followed by an intervention period of up to 12 months, although this varies considerable depending on the individual needs. The program is an ecological model which means that work is undertaken with the systems around the child or young person. This can vary but general consists of parents, care givers, schools, and community services involved with the family.
